Heather Kuehl (pronounced "keel") was born near the Great Lakes, but made her way to South Carolina where she lives to this day. Heather, to what age group is your work geared?
My books are geared towards readers that are 18 years and up, especially since they contain violence and sex.
Into which genre would you say your work falls and why?
I consider my work to be paranormal/fantasy romance. The world I write in is one where you can see a dragon fly through the sky during the day, get bitten by a vampire at night, and fall in love with a werewolf under the light of a full moon.
Tell us a little about your book.
Malevolent Dead is the sequel to Fade to Black and the second book in the Sarah Vargas series. It picks up six months after the end of Fade.
Synopsis
To save everyone, she'll have to do the unthinkable. Werewolf Sarah Vargas thought all she had to worry about was the Blood Moon Corporation's retaliation. Who is your favorite character in your books and why?
T.D. Drake is my absolute favorite. She’s a bad ass witch that loves her guns and hates to be messed with. Every time I write her I wish that I was her.
What other writers would you say have influenced your work and why? What are some of your favorite books in the genre?
I’ve been influenced by the works of Kim Harrison and Brian Jacques; Mrs. Harrison because of her long-term character building plots and Mr. Jacques for his wonderful descriptions. I love reading books by Sherrilyn Kenyon, Anne McCaffrey, as well as Charlaine Harris and Terry Goodkind.
What is your writing process like? Do you do a lot of background research? Do you plot every detail or do you prefer the characters to move the story in new directions, or a combination of both? Do you belong to a critique group and do you find this helpful?
When I start out writing a book, I create a rough outline stating what I’d like to happen in each chapter. But my outlines aren’t written in stone. If the characters want to go a different direction I don’t care as long as they defeat the bad guy in the end. Critique groups are very helpful, especially if you can find one that’s good and that you can trust. I used to belong to one, but after a bad experience with a particular member I decided to quit.
Do you have any advice for young or beginning writers?
Keep at it and never give up. It’s going to be a long, hard road to get published but it will all be worth it in the end.
